DOES MINOCYCLINE WORK FOR ACNE?

MINOCYCLINE AND ACNE

Minocycline is an oral tetracycline antibiotic that helps in reducing severe acne by an average of about 60 percent. Besides acne, Minocycline is used in the treatment of various bacterial infections such as respiratory infections, amoebiasis, cholera, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, syphilis, urethritis, and others.

MINOCYCLINE ACNE PRODUCTS

There are several popular brands on the market that make use of minocycline as their main ingredient. The following list shows these brands, as well as the form the minocycline preparation takes and the concentration per product:

• Generic capsules, tablets & liquid form (50 mg, 75 mg, 100 mg, taken twice a day)

• Minocin capsules & oral suspension (50 mg, 100 mg, also taken twice a day)

• Dynacin capsules & tablets (50 mg, 100 mg, taken twice a day)

• Vectrin capsules (50 mg, 100 mg, taken twice a day)

HOW TO APPLY MINOCYCLINE FOR ACNE TREATMENT?

As you may have noticed, the products above usually come in 50 mg variants or 100 mg variants.

Those who want to take the anti-acne medication once a day have the option of purchasing the 100 mg capsules, tablets or oral suspensions.

Those who want to take the medication twice a day may purchase the 50 mg variants.

One of the best things about minocycline is that you don’t have to eat anything before taking it. That means you can still take your anti-acne antibiotics before you sprint to work without breakfast.

Do not take the minocycline with milk or other dairy products, unless your doctor has told you to. Certain brands of minocycline may not have restrictions about taking them with dairy products. If your doctor has instructed you to take minocycline with milk, tell your pharmacist that you need a brand of minocycline that can be taken with milk.

Avoid exposure to sunlight or artificial UV rays (sunlamps or tanning beds). Minocycline can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and sunburn may result. Use a sunscreen (minimum SPF 15) and wear protective clothing if you must be out in the sun.

When improvement can already be seen, your doctor may decide to lower the dosage required per day. There’s no permanence here; once the acne has cleared, you can stop taking the antibiotic. Remember, prolonged use of antibiotics has its dangerous side effects.

MINOCYCLINE SIDE EFFECTS ON ACNE

Every good thing on earth has a bad side. The following are documented side effects of minocycline to users:

1) Patients may experience dizziness. If you experience dizziness, you might want to adjust the amount of minocycline you’re taking.

2) Long-term use of the product may cause your gums to turn blue. Don’t worry though, this usually clears up when you stop using minocycline.

3) You may experience vertigo and nausea if you’re taking extremely high dosages. If you are taking a daily amount that’s almost close to 200 mg, it’s time to lower the dose.

4) Minocycline also causes pigmentation of the teeth. It’s very rare, but once it does occur, the bluish hue will no longer disappear on its own. If the hue bothers you, you may have to go the dentist to have it concealed.

Drug-induced lupus erythematosus may occur in some individuals in the middle of the oral treatment.
