BENZOYL PEROXIDE AND ACNE TREATMENT

TREATING ACNE WITH BENZOYL PEROXIDE

Acne may be considered as one of the few “universal” problems of teenagers around the world. The problem is not completely environmental, it cannot be avoided completely by genetics and it has nothing to do with cultural practices. It just so happens that at a particular phase of growth and development, the human skin becomes more prone to infection, which often leads to acne.

WHY ACNE IS FORMED?

Horrified teenagers would do just about anything to escape the fate of having facial acne. Scientifically known as “acne vulgaris”, acne is the sum total of many factors, including:

- General diet

- Hormone levels

- Age

- Genetic predisposition

- Environment

Essentially, acne comes about when the right conditions for a particular skin type manifest itself. A concrete example would be this: Person X has the “oily” skin type, which means Person X’s skin is almost always oily and moist. Person X lives in a humid environment, and had just turned 14. At an age when boys and girls begin to pair up pseudo-romantically, Person X suddenly has a bout with acne vulgaris.

With one or two components missing, the acne would not have manifested at this particular age. But because the conditions had already been ripe, acne did appear. It’s not Person X’s fault that he now has acne. It just so happens that everything was there to make acne a reality.

Even stress can play a part in the manifestation of the unsightly red-green-yellow lesions on a person’s skin. If you have had pristine skin for the last 15 years and suddenly your face completely becomes acne-field in a matter of days after a stressful semester at the University, then it is quite obvious what had happened.

KNOWN TREATMENT - BENZOYL PEROXIDE

There is NO complete acne treatment that may be bought simply from your neighborhood drugstore. Creams, pills and other chemical substances only help in healing infected skin. The rest of the healing process is up to the person- even a person’s immune system plays a vital role in making the skin heal faster.

Benzoyl peroxide has been around the market for about 25 years, and has been known to provide substantial relief from the symptoms of acne. Though the chemical was not produced primarily to treat acne, desperate individuals around the world, calls on its healing properties to make their acne go away. The Food and Drug Association in America state that caution should always be practiced when using Benzoyl peroxide.

The cause of their worry is that skin, when treated with this chemical, and finally exposed to the sun, may result in tumors. Though at this time there are no conclusive evidences that may point at the direct relation between Benzoyl peroxide and skin cancer, caution should still be practiced. If you plan to use it, don’t go out into the sun immediately. And always wash your face thoroughly before going out.

This precaution extends well beyond the borders of using diluted portions of the chemical. Some anti-acne creams have one active ingredient in common: Benzoyl peroxide. This means that you are still being exposed to the same risks as if you were using an undiluted solution of the same chemical. Precaution should be practiced in this instance as well.
