SKIN PEELERS AND TREATMENT OF ACNE

THE DANGERS OF SKIN PEELERS AND ITS USE IN THE TREATMENT OF ACNE

Pharmaceutical companies are known to peddle different kinds of products based on demand. For the past couple of years, acne outbreaks have become more and more frequent even for those in the age range of 20 to 25. Because of the rise of adult acne, different over the counter “treatments” have emerged throughout the years. Up to this day, they are still mushrooming out on the Internet, unregulated by the FDA.

Sometimes, products that are sold in more traditional avenues, like brick-and-mortar stores still evade the trusty eyes of the Food and Drug Authority. One of these products, which has posed a health hazard to people who used it, are skin peelers.

WHAT ARE SKIN PEELERS?

Skin peelers are chemical-based cosmetic products that speed up the exfoliation or shedding of human skin upon application. These chemical skin peelers have been hailed as the most effective and cheapest way to deal with ugly wrinkles on the face, stubborn blemishes (whether in-born or caused by sun damage) and of course, acne vulgaris and acne.

According to the Food and Drug Authority, the chemicals used in the skin peelers might be dangerous. The FDA was not picking on the company that produced the skin peelers, it was actually working with alarming reports of horrifying injuries across the United States. A woman for instance, living in Los Angeles, reported to have suffered from ugly second degree burns when a chemical peeler was applied on her legs.

If the skin peeler can do that to the legs, what more damage could ensue after applying it to more sensitive parts of the body, such as the face and the neck, or even the nape? In reality, the chemicals used in such skin peelers have this tendency to penetrate the human skin far too deeply, causing chemical burns. Chemical burns, like old-school burns from flames, hurt just as much and scar just as much.

THE CHEMICAL INGREDIENTS

Usually, skin peelers have more than three active ingredients, which marks just how efficient these chemical peeler is in removing live skin surfaces. The following are just some of the chemicals that may be found in self-proclaimed skin peelers:

   *      Resorcinol

   *      Lactic acid

   *      Salicylic acid

If these chemicals sound harmless, if they are given in extreme dosages, they can be as deadly as anything. As a general rule of thumb, any chemical in the world is a poison if too much is used. Even ordinary rubbing alcohol can cause problems if used far too much. Chemicals are chemicals- they are mainly antagonistic elements that need to be regulated before use to be beneficial to humans.

Unfortunately, chemical peelers no longer thrive on regulation. In fact, at the speed at which the skin peels, it seems that the skin peelers are bent on doing its job fairly well, regardless if the person using the peeler is getting hurt already or not.

If you are going to use skin peelers for your acne, remember to consult first with the proper medical practitioner because they are actually the only ones knowledgeable enough to use these chemicals safely. Do not play Russian roulette with your skin; because the results of the “treatment” might be worse than your acne.
