Ayurveda is not just an approach to acne treatment. It is a whole body and mind system, designed to bring balance to both the spirit and its physical expressions. In order to address physical ailments like acne, then, it recommends not just a skin care regimen aimed at the symptoms of an unbalanced organ; it recommends a full overhaul of diet and lifestyle to address the root causes of unhappy and unbalanced skin.
How to Address Breakouts Internally
When an individual is suffering from recent breakouts and acne, the Ayurvedic system recommends adjusting everything in the individual’s life in order to improve the immune system and better fight off blemishes and infections. To that end, acne sufferers should begin limiting their intake of particular substances like sugar, caffeine, salt and processed foods. They should seek out mint juice and water instead of tea and coffee, green salads and foods rich in beta carotene instead of refined pastas and grains, and natural sweeteners like honey or agave nectar instead of sugar. Individuals should also decrease their stress levels by practicing meditation and sleeping regular hours each night.
How to Address Breakouts Externally
Just because most of the focus of Ayurvedic acne treatment is on the internal system of the individual, does not mean that there are not ways that individuals can address the external symptoms of breakouts as well. A paste of crushed orange peel or a mask of turmeric and sandalwood can dry out oils that affect the skin and attack the bacteria that cause breakouts. Likewise a mask made of cucumber and carrot juices can restore a number of the healthy oils that maintain healthy and youthful looking skin. There is also a great mask of lemon juice and rose water. Any topical applications should be washed off with warm water before sleep so the substances do not cause further irritation of the pores.
The Limitations of the Ayurvedic System
While the general approach to a well-ordered and healthy body is certainly an enlightened one and will help with any symptoms of imbalance and infection, the Ayurvedic system is not a foolproof system for dealing with skin care problems. Ayurvedic acne treatment is based on a possibly flawed understanding of how acne develops. Modern medical science has largely disproven that ingestion of particular foods can affect the severity and frequency of breakouts. Also, while the acids in certain foods may help reduce the redness of blemishes and affect some of the oils in the skin, they may not be as effective as other natural and medical remedies.
Because the basis of any Ayurvedic system is an evaluation of the individual’s whole health, it is certainly one of the most comprehensive approaches to acne treatment. Whether it is successful or not depends entirely upon the individual and how the system is implemented. If adhering to a full lifestyle system enables a better balance of hormones, an enhanced immune system and better overall skin care, there is every chance Ayurveda will help rid an individual of acne.
